If you’ve ever surfed the World Wide Web (And we know you have. You’re doing it right now.), then you already know a bit about what webmasters do. They make web sites. They take written content, images, graphics, movies and sound and turn them into easily accessible and navigable websites. They give computers and server the directions about how all these elements should be displayed on a computer screen.

A webmaster (also known as a web developer, web architect, or website administrator) is someone who maintains one (or many) websites. To launch and run a website, there is a lot of work behind the scenes. Their role includes everything website related: ensuring that servers, software and hardware are functioning; designing the website itself; reviewing content; performing SEO tasks; management of user access rights; and website navigation.

Webmasters need a wide knowledge of scripted languages like PHP, HTML, Javascript and Perl. They need to know how all these different languages ‘talk’ to different browsers and how to ensure that the website can be viewed regardless of the browser being used to view it. They could also be required to know how to configure servers like Apache or IIS.

Webmasters also need to know how to undertake programming; this is an essential part of establishing and running any website. Training in C programming is vital for a webmaster to excel in this area. Programming is involved in developing any site, and in incorporating special features which may be required. If computer generated images are required, a webmaster will be required to undertake this task as well. They also need to ensure that the graphics do not impact on the website loading speed. Generally, there are graphic designers employed to assist in this task as well.

To remain current, and continue getting top marks in the SEO stakes, websites must be constantly refreshed. Refreshing a website requires the creation of new pages, often from scratch. Again, this task is part of the role of a webmaster. It is a two part job. The first part is architectural; the webmaster ensures that the new page can be accessed via, and linked to, other pages on the site. Then the content must be developed and it must be consistent with content on the rest of the site.

So, the job of a webmaster is quite involved and quires a number of different skill sets and knowledge bases. It can be complex, but the right training will eliminate any difficulties. The success of any website relies on how proficient and professional your webmaster is. With this in mind, it is usually best to employ a webmaster with a high level of experience and skills.
